Case Study

A contemporary new-build development by Taylor Wimpey in Welwyn Garden City

We worked with Taylor Wimpey’s North Thames regional business unit to specify plasterboard products for a new contemporary housing development in Welwyn Garden City. Our Plasterboard Recycling Service was also used to minimise environmental impact.

A large scale new-build development

Taylor Wimpey’s new-build housing development in Welwyn Garden City features a selection of contemporary homes, including 50 three-storey terrace houses and 159 apartments. With such a large project, it was highly important that the products selected allowed for a quick and easy installation to help the contractors meet their strict timescales. Alongside this, each product also needed to meet rigorous acoustic and thermal requirements as stipulated by Building Regulations.

As part of the project, Taylor Wimpey were keen to minimise the environmental impact of the work in order to meet its sustainability objectives. We suggested our Plasterboard Recycling Service as a cost effective way to help cut down on waste.

A high-quality finish

Our DriLyner Dab masonry lining system was selected by Taylor Wimpey to be used on partitions and exterior walls. This solution offered a quick and easy method for contractors to dryline brick, block and concrete walls. It also met Approved Document E of the Building Regulations for acoustic performance, giving sound insulation airborne to Rw 60 dB.

To improve acoustic performance even further, Gyproc SoundCoat Plus was used on the partition walls in both the apartments and the terrace houses. This parge coat minimised air leakage through cracks and unfilled joints, improving energy efficiency and limiting noise pollution.

Tony Butcher, Project Manager at Taylor Wimpey North Thames, explains: “Due to the size of the project, and the strict timescales we were under, we needed a solution that required as little labour as possible. DriLyner Dab was easy to use, and really simplified the installation process from start  to finish.

“We use British Gypsum products for all our plaster and drylining needs, as they are easy to use and long lasting. The technical support we have received from the team has also been a fantastic help, and allowed us to get the project completed seamlessly within strict timescales.”

Taylor Wimpey also took advantage of our Plasterboard Recycling Service in order to minimise the environmental impact of the project. Tony continued: “The Plasterboard Recycling Service was a great help. It was a cost effective recycling option that not only saved us a lot of time and effort, but also helped us meet our sustainability objectives. British Gypsum supplied the skips we needed for the waste products, and took them away to be recycled at its onsite recycling facility.”

We care about building better.
