Case Study

Reconfiguring the National College for Advanced Transport & Infrastructure

We helped create an innovative reconfigurable interior to suit changing student needs. Our Rigidur H simplified the scheduling of trades, kept the project on schedule and within budget and helped turn a complex design into a robust working college.

A future-proof college

The key feature of the design brief for Doncaster’s National College for Advanced Transport & Infrastructure was flexibility. The client wanted the freedom to reconfigure the interior as the needs of its students changed. It also asked for a robust finish that would take fixtures and fittings in as many locations as possible.

A clever and cost-effective design through collaboration

To meet the client’s fix-to-anything challenge, Bond Bryan Architects initially thought they’d have to line the entire building in ply. But Rigidur H came to the rescue. With the right fixings, Rigidur H can take a load of up to 50kg. As well as meeting the building’s acoustic (up to 54dB) and fire (120 minutes) specifications, Rigidur H also simplified the scheduling of trades. It allowed the interior contractor to install a full-height internal wall at the same time as other trades were at work. This kept the project on schedule and firmly within budget.

We were brought on to the preconstruction team at an early stage by the main contractor, Willmott Dixon. This allowed everyone to understand how they could use the materials to achieve the planned design right away. Our innovative and collaborative approach helped to pave the way to a successful project completion. Roger Morton, Willmott Dixon’s Construction Manager says: “The Rigidur products allowed us to easily achieve this design to programme and budget. We’ve got a delighted client and the overall effect of achieving what we set out to do, which is a world-class facility, is evident for all to see. The end result speaks for itself.”

We care about building better.
