55 Colmore Row renovation restores Grade II listed façade

One of the most prestigious Birmingham business venues has been sensitively refurbished using the latest additions to our patching and repair range to achieve a superior finish within a tight deadline.

High quality finish for a prestigious business venue

The project consisted of an extensive refurbishment programme to create 160,000 square feet of grade-A commercial accommodation at 55 Colmore Row, Birmingham.

Taking centre stage has been the restoration of the Grade II listed banqueting hall. Its 20 iconic columns needed to be returned to their former splendour within a four-day schedule without using corner or edge beading for conservation reasons. Therefore, a high quality finish was required to withstand the scrutiny under powerful downlighters.

Achieving great results in a short amount of time/ efficiently

In order to achieve a superior finish within a tight deadline, Thistle® Bonding 60 was selected due to the setting time of 60 minutes. This provided a rapid, consistent finish on the deep flaws in the columns’ plasterwork. Our Gyproc® EasiFill 20 filler was then used over the surface of each column, which sets in 20 minutes and can be easily sanded down once dry to achieve the perfectly smooth finish required.

Phil Lewis, Contracts Director at Taylor Hart Ltd, said: “Working within such a tight timeframe and the need for the highest quality finish meant that our product choice was more important than ever. British Gypsum’s patching and repair products saved us a lot of time on site and helped us meet this challenge head on. The result speaks for itself and we will definitely be using Thistle Bonding 60 and Gyproc Easi-Fill 20 again on jobs in the future.”

We care about building better.
