British Gypsum is one of the sponsors of SkillBuild, a national competition run by the CITB with endorsement from WorldSkills.

Competitions, for construction trainees and apprentices, are held for ten construction disciplines and entrants are judged not only on technical abilities, but also time management, character and commitment. Plastering and drywall systems are two of these disciplines.

Competitions are held regionally, with finals being held at the Skills Show at the NEC in November.

Success in the SkillBuild competition gives winners the opportunity to go forward into the WorldSkill global event as part of the UK WorldSkill team. To compete at this level entrants must be no more than 22 years of age. The last WorldSkill competition was held in Abu Dhabi in 2017.

“At British Gypsum we recognise the need to support our current and future plasterers and dry liners in the construction industry. This is why we have developed supporting over 75 colleges nationally through our Thistle Plasters Partnership and Interior Systems Partnership, with an integral part of this being to support students through regional and national SkillBuild competitions and WorldSkills Squad UK and Team UK.

“Having SkillBuild support apprentices and students to be the best they can in their given trade is fundamental in developing highly skilled tradespeople for the future. As well as developing practical skills, competing helps build confidence and communication skills at the same time and this is why British Gypsum are proud to be a key sponsor of SkillBuild.”
