What can cause acoustic failures?

There can be many reasons for sound insulation failures such as air leakage paths, flanking transmission, inappropriate specification and poor workmanship.

How to deal with salt contamination in the background?

This is usually due to prolonged condensation or damp within the building and this will need to be resolved after identification the route of the cause. This could be maintenance such as gutters or down pipes, ineffective damp proof course (DPC), or poor design.

Once the issue has been resolved the use of an independent wall lining using the GypLyner Independent system may be a better solution than plastering.

What centres are the studs installed for ceramic tiling?

The addition of tiling to British Gypsum partition and lining systems significantly increases loading, and therefore, dependent on the system used, typically requires reduced stud centres to bear the extra weight.

Why use Gyproc Sealant?

Our Gyproc Sealant is used for sealing air paths to reduce air leakage and optimise sound insulation performance.

It also has excellent adhesive qualities and benefits from being water based rather than solvent based. It's also the product we use when carrying out system testing and therefore we know it will work as intended.

Are timber inserts required to metal stud partitions?

Timber inserts (such as plywood) are installed to support additional loading which is beyond the capability of the Gypframe components, for example when accommodating sinks and grab rails.

Our Gypframe Service Support Plate, which carries 18mm plywood within the cavity of the partition, provides a strong background for fixings through the plasterboard lining.

How do I acoustically upgrade an existing masonry wall?

We offer several system options for doing this, selection will depend on factors such as type of background, height of lining and performance required.

The solutions commonly used are Gyproc SoundBloc plasterboard and Isover insulation with the GypLyner Independent or GypLyner Single systems.

How do you fire upgrade a lath and plaster ceiling?

First, the existing lath and plaster ceiling should be fully retained with suitable reinforcing, for example, chicken wire, which should be designed and fixed in accordance with guidance from a structural engineer based on the calculated weight of the existing ceiling. This is to prevent a situation where an old ceiling falls onto the new GypCeiling lining, therefore, adding additional weight which the new system is not capable of supporting.
