A helping hand from British Gypsum
In order to promote excellence in the industry and give apprentices the best start in their career, we donate technical expertise and free material to the UK’s largest construction skills competition SkillBuild.
Consisting of 15 regional heats and a national final in Birmingham this November, SkillBuild is a Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) initiative to celebrate the best emerging talent.
Oliver Farrell, SkillBuild Manager at CITB, said:
“SkillBuild gives construction trainees the opportunity to showcase their talents. The competition’s success is thanks to the support from colleges who help run the heats, the judges and of course our sponsors who kindly donate products. Their commitment and the dedication of the apprentices who take part, is why SkillBuild continues to be the largest and longest-running construction skills competition in the UK.”
As well as the donation of plaster and drylining materials, we also invest a significant amount of time and expertise in the form of David Kehoe, Technical Support and Training Representative and other employees to help to judge the competitions.
After recently attending the Welsh regional heat at Coleg Menai, David commented:
“It’s really encouraging to see so many talented young dryliners and plasterers coming through the colleges. By donating the materials and coming along to judge the competitions we can ensure apprentices are learning with the best products available and are entering the world of work with the skills they need. At British Gypsum we are committed to supporting the next generation of tradespeople and SkillBuild is a fantastic opportunity to do just that.”
In addition to supporting SkillBuild, there is the Thistle Partnership initiative which encourages learning and helps to address the current skills gap. The partnership is between British Gypsum and 75 colleges across the UK and it involves the donation of materials, access to resources, step-by-step videos and direct support from technical experts. Benefitting more than 4,000 students a year, we donate 300 staff hours, enough plasterboard to fit the length of 215 football pitches and enough plaster to complete 4,540 houses.
