By choosing materials that conserve energy you can reduce the environmental impact of a building throughout its lifetime, while reducing energy costs for residents at the same time.
Why do we need to be energy efficient?
In 2008 the Climate Change Act was passed to reduce our emission of greenhouse gases and slow climate change. As a result, a comprehensive plan was established by the government to meet the targets set out within the Act:
- The Climate Change Act requires that an 80% reduction on 1990 levels of greenhouse gases is achieved by 2050
- It is required that at least a 30% reduction on 1990 levels is achieved by 2020.
In addition to this, it is now a more common desire to increase our energy efficiency in order to significantly reduce energy bills.
How can we be energy efficient?
The government has recognised that the existing housing stock is key to us reducing our carbon emissions as a country, as it is estimated that at least 70% of houses likely to exist in 2050 have already been built.
Currently, buildings emit 44% of all greenhouse gases from the UK and 27% of emissions come directly from homes, so refurbishing and retrofitting buildings on both an individual and neighbourhood scale is key to achieving the Climate Change Act targets.
Up to 45% of heat can be lost through the walls of a home so insulating them can be a very cost-effective way of reducing energy consumption and retaining heat. Internal wall insulation is an economical form of insulation in solid wall properties and is an eligible measure under ECO and other other funding schemes which may be available from time to time. This allows homeowners to spread the initial installation costs across their electricity bills.

There are many benefits of being energy efficient, including the prevention of unnecessary harm to the environment and the huge savings that can be made on household bills for years to come. It has been estimated by the Energy Saving Trust that up to £460 can be saved per annum by installing solid wall insulation in your home.
