Malik Javed (Cost Controller)
After leaving university with a master’s degree in accounting and finance, Malik Javed began looking for his first graduate role. He spent time assessing his options to make sure he found the right fit, but has now found a home with British Gypsum.
We caught up with him to find out how he’s getting on and what his plans are for the future.
What first drew you to British Gypsum?
When I finished my degree I really wanted to find a financial role within a market leading company. This drew me to the Saint-Gobain Group, which has a range of opportunities across its network of companies. When I first applied I didn’t know I’d end up working at British Gypsum, but I’m glad things have worked out the way they have.
It was clear that there’s a family like atmosphere throughout the sites, with a real sense of community. By the time it came to making a decision about my future I had a few job offers on the table, but the choice was obvious. The role was absolutely perfect for me and there was the added benefit that I got to work close to home, as the Kirkby Thore plant is local to me.
Tell us about your career with British Gypsum so far?
I joined the company in July 2017 but it feels so much shorter; the time has flown past. When I first joined I went on a really informative induction course that taught me everything about the company and its products. I have also been given a lot of responsibility at an early stage, which enabled me to build my experience and develop new skills quickly. What’s more, I had the opportunity to go to a range of Saint-Gobain graduate events, which was really positive and meant I got to network with a lot of people from British Gypsum and other Saint-Gobain companies.
Give us a brief description of your role.
I work as a Cost Controller, which means I’m heavily involved in the financial side of production. Every site within British Gypsum has a team of Controllers, which, as the title indicates, are tasked with looking after controlling costs on site. This means if I ever have any issues, I can easily contact someone from a different site and they are always more than happy to help.
As part of my role I analyse the financial performance of the Kirkby Thore plant and maintain the site’s General Ledger Accounts.
How do you see your role developing in the future?
I’m still relatively new to this role, so right now I’m more than content. Currently my main focus is to become a qualified accountant and I’m very appreciative that British Gypsum is fully supporting me with achieving that ambition. Looking forward, I’d like to stay in the finance sector and become a core member of the Kirkby Thore team.
What’s it like working in the Saint-Gobain Group?
I think the big advantage of working in a group like this is the huge amount of opportunity on offer. My growth is unrestricted within Saint-Gobain. I’m able to move to another job or company in a number of countries across the world. It’s a massive benefit when compared to other companies and leaves me really excited about what’s in store for the future.
