East Berkshire College

Education, Healthcare and Hospitality category

East Berkshire College's Langley College building has been at the heart of the community since 1976 and currently serves over 2,400 students from the Langley and Slough area. As part of a commitment to continually raising standards, a £30m improvement project was undertaken at their Langley College. The refurbishment has provided state-of-the-art learning facilities, including a new Hospitality & Catering Academy, to meet the community's current and future learning needs.

Bond Bryan was appointed to carry out a master planning project for East Berkshire College’s Langley Campus, in Slough. This included proposals for a number of phases on a rolling programme starting in 2011 and finishing in 2015. A key driver for the project is to improve the provision for learners with disability. The scheme was designed to achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’.

A new main entrance and ‘Street’ connects to the existing building linking to the refurbished student services and study centre. The heart of the College has been will be completely re-modelled to place the learning and student services facilities at the centre of a new student centre with much needed informal learning, study and social space. A purpose built new sports centre is located to the west of the site, which includes a four-court sports hall, fitness suite, studio and boxing training facility. This building includes a restaurant open to the public and a hotel training facility.

Through consultation with students, staff and local residents, the College's project team developed an exciting evolutionary design for the college. British Gypsum also worked closely with Ecophon, one of its sister companies, to ensure all Saint-Gobain specifications remained in place as well as ensuring on-site support was offered.
