Commonwealth Games Athletes Villages, Glasgow
Commonwealth Games Athletes Villages, Glasgow – Residential Category
The athletes’ village for the 2014 Commonwealth games is situated on a 35 hectare site on the east side of Glasgow. Originally build to house 8000 athletes as well as providing a retail area, recreation area, dining hall and medical facilities for them during the competition.
After the games the site was further developed using £300 million from City Legacy into 1400 houses for the social rental sector. RMJM the Architect on this scheme designed the houses with the future occupants in mind to exceed current thermal regulation and fire rating requirements. Solar Photovoltaic panels were also included in the design to provide the properties with some free electricity and also export back to the grid when not required.
Working with three construction partners, CCG , Cruden Homes and Mactaggart & Mickel, British Gypsum specified Gyproc ThermaLine Plus internally to help the properties exceed thermal regulations as specified by the Architect. As a result of the project off-Site manufacturing opportunities are being explored by all parties for future similar projects to reduce costs and lead times.
