Main Focus
The main focus The main focus of the project was construction
and fit-out of the first of 22 planned Virgin Active Leisure
Centres. A division wall of GypWall metal stud separating wall,
based on 146mm 'Jumbo' metal studs, effectively halved the
building, separating pool activities and treatment rooms from the
Gymnasium, Dance Studio and Library, with sub division partitions
on either side of the separating wall to form the various activity
rooms.
Challenge
The challenge The challenge occurred because the main division
wall could not be fixed to the roof structure, as the lightweight
construction had to deflect under wind pressure uplift and
anticipated snow loading. As the roof structure was estimated to
move about 135mm, there was a requirement for a canopy of
restraint.
Solution
The solution The solution was an inverted U shape, formed using
a matrix of Metsec purlins covered with 15mm Glasroc FireCase
S to create a track, into which
the head of the Jumbo partition cantilevered over the pool at high
level, changing from straight lines to a curve. The necessary
support was accomplished using pre-formed rolled hollow steel
sections and the final curved effect lining achieved by use of
12.5mm Glasroc MultiBoard. This solution, with 25mm Isover Acoustic
Partition Roll (1200) in the cavity of the division wall,
successfully maintains fire protection and sound control along with
the required lateral restraint.
