Main Focus
The main focus was to provide partition walls between individual
shop units within the retail centre to meet stringent fire
performance criteria and to withstand fire fighting operations and
impact.
Challenge
The challenge was for the partition to satisfy dual performance
criteria. In addition to a 2 hour fire protection requirement, the
dividing walls between each retail outlet would need to withstand
impact resistance when wet. In the case of an outbreak of fire, the
sprinkler system would activate, thus drenching the
plasterboard.
Solution
The solution involved the construction of a system based on a
GypWall CLASSIC metal stud
partition (146mm 'Jumbo' C Studs), lined with Gyproc Plank, faced
with Gyproc FireLine MR and
cavity insulated with 25mm Isover 1200. A special test rig was
constructed at British Gypsum's Building Test Centre, where all the
potential problem conditions were created. All concerned in the
specification, including the Trafford Fire Brigade, witnessed the
tests and saw the system pass with flying colours.
