Main Focus
The main focus The main focus of the project was installation of
a unique suspended ceiling in the foyer of the 1,730 seat Lyric
Theatre situated within the Lowry Centre. This new national venue
for the performing arts is one of the early Best Practice
demonstration projects following Egans Rethinking Construction.
Challenge
The challenge The challenge demanded a suspended ceiling profile
that had never been attempted before. The ceiling was required to
span approximately 9 metres, sloping from one side down to the
other. The surface at the top end was to be flat and gradually
transform into a pronounced wavy surface at the lower end. The
problem was compounded because both adjoining walls were either
curved on plan, or at an unusual angle to the proposed ceiling.
This complicated aesthetic design also had to provide 60 minutes
fire resistance from below.
Solution
The solution The solution was to fit Gypframe 146 I 90 'I'
Studs, from a fixed point and then twist along the run of the slope
to achieve the correct profile. This framework was then lined with
multiple layers of 6mm Glasroc MultiBoard, with 150mm rock mineral
wool to complete the system. A full scale mock up was successfully
erected at the Building Test Centre to prove the principle to
subcontractors and architects. This solution eliminated the need
for complicated computer-aided design, facilitating simpler on-site
installation and a reduction in the amount of hangers required.
