Rolls Royce Factory: Fan Casing Facility

Main Focus

The main focus of the project, after change of use had been designated for the adjacent factory, was to upgrade the fire protection on the separating wall to a full 30 minutes, without causing any disruption of production of fan casings for Rolls Royce engines destined to power Boeing and Airbus planes, with likely attendant costs of £10M per week.

Challenge

The challenge arose because the lining system could only be built from one side, with no disruption to production, utilising a clean, dust-free installation system, which would also be easy to maintain in terms of repair and repainting.

Solution

The solution was to use the GypLyner IWL system with 60mm Gypframe 'I' Studs, in front of the existing profiled wall panel, but tied back to it at mid height. Gypframe GFS1 Fixing Strap was installed behind horizontal board joints. All board joints were treated with intumescent mastic and the joints were covered using Gyproc Joint Trims. Each 15mm Gyproc FireLine board was thus fixed and trims fitted in one continuous process, ensuring a speedy and clean installation.

25mm Glasroc FireCase S was also used at columns and head fixings for extra protection, along with ease of fixing back to the steel work.

This solution was eminently suitable for the factory owners, their insurance company and building control.
