Main Focus
The main focus of the project involved the demolition and
rebuilding of 3 aircraft hangars for use by the Fleet Air Arm where
Sea Harriers and Helicopters Front Line Squadrons receive
logistical support. Hangar No.2 provides an Engineering Training
School (ETS) for aircraft maintenance and a Plastic Media Strip
Facility (PMS); this latter being the first of its kind for the
Royal Navy. A media, made up of plastic deformable balls is fired,
under pressure, at the paint coatings of aircraft and removes all
layers of paint in a speedy and effective process.
Challenge
The challenge was to provide a 2 hour rated, maintenance
free, fair faced, firewall to divide the ETS from the PMS facility,
centrally for the full length of the hangar; approximately 8 metres
in height and 70 metres long. The MOD's requirements also included
a flush finish on the PMS side and the finished wall to provide a
light and clean environment to cope with the industrial processes
being carried out within.
Solution
The solution involved the use of GypWall metal stud
partition (146mm 'Jumbo' studs), with two layers of 15mm Glasroc
FireCase s fixed to both sides of the wall, with all joints
staggered. All projecting brace and column members on the ETS side
were boxed in with Glasroc FireCase s to maintain the fire
integrity.
Glasroc FireCase s has also been used extensively in
other areas of the Hangar - a 1 hour fire rated suspended ceiling
to the PMS booth beam and column encasements to structural
steelwork; fire rated bulkheads over
