Bluewater Park, Kent

Main Focus

The main focus of the project was to provide ceiling constructions within Europe's largest retail and leisure development. The centre provides 154,000m2 of floor space for more than 320 retail outlets, spread over 3 malls each catering for a different type of shopper, and themed accordingly.

Challenge

The challenge was to provide eye catching ceiling solutions for the West Mall and Welcome Halls, which would also meet stringent acoustic and aesthetic requirements.

Solution

The solution was to form a vaulted ceiling, utilising Gypframe MF7 Primary Support Channel for the curved sections, suspended by steel angles fixed on to structural steel members, with 1200 x 2400mm Arteco Gyptone boards and Glasroc MultiBoard fixed to Gypframe MF5 Ceiling Section making up alternate solid horizontal bands. The acoustic specialists were concerned about noise levels within the Mall, but keen to retain the visual quality of the ceilings. Consequently British Gypsum produced a specially made life-size sample of the curved ceiling for the project architects to observe in test conditions, which satisfied all requirements.
