BFI IMAX Cinema

Main Focus

The main focus of the project was to supply a ceiling solution for the unusually shaped British Film Institute's IMAX Cinema, set in the middle of one of London's busiest roundabouts. At just 4.5m above two underground lines, in close proximity to a railway line and with access via several underpasses, noise transmission was a major concern.

Challenge

The challenge was to provide an aesthetically pleasing and acoustically effective ceiling in the main reception and foyer area, whilst also taking into account the unusual cylindrical shaped design of the cinema.

Solution

The solution was to create a unique product, by utilising specially cut trapezoidal shaped Arteco Gyptone Plank POINT ceiling tiles for use in the foyer, alongside a CasoLine MF suspended ceiling, curving at 26 degrees and measuring 25m across and 10m deep. Seven different shapes and sizes of the high performance, sound absorbant tiles were used, cut into various shapes and sizes resembling cake wedges.

Some 2,000 square metres of Glasroc MultiBoard was also used for the interior curved walls, which were designed around a giant curved screen, at 21m high, taller than four double-decker buses.
