Part L - Section 6

Section 6 stipulates minimum levels of thermal performance for walls, roofs and floors in buildings. These performance requirements are detailed in the table below.

There are three methods of demonstrating compliance with Section 6 in Scotland:

(1) Target U-value method
(2) Carbon index method
(3) Elemental method

The ‘Elemental method’ is by far the simplest to use and is suitable for extensions, alterations and new-build work where the heating system achieves approved minimum boiler efficiency. To comply, each element of the external envelope of the dwelling (e.g. external walls, pitched roof etc) must achieve the required U-values.
