Marine Equipment Directive (MED)

”The Marine Equipment Directive (MED) covers certain statutory equipment carried and used on ships registered under the flags of the European Union member states which are required to meet the international conventions (e.g. SOLAS, MARPOL, etc.).”

Lloyds Register - Factsheet MED 2004

In short the intention of the directive is to create standardised compliance across all EU member states certifying that common standards of safety and performance are achieved for all applicable products.

There are a number of products covered by the directive but it is the provision of fire protection products that is applicable to BPB. Glass Reinforced Gypsum (GRG) used in a marine application i.e., fire doors, must be MED certified and be accompanied by the MED Mark of Conformity. This is commonly referred to as the ‘wheelmark’.

BPB are able to provide GRG to MED conformity. For further information please contact the Export Sales Office.
