New partition will withstand car bomb blast
British Gypsum has developed a new BlastWall partition that will
protect people and assets in the event of a bomb attack, and could
provide an ideal way of countering the terrorist threat in our
major cities.
The new British Gypsum BlastWall system has been proved in Home
Office monitored tests to be capable of withstanding a blast
replicating a car bomb at medium distance. It is therefore ideal
for general protection, and for creating blast refuge areas to
protect building occupants and remove the need for evacuation into
the path of possible secondary blasts.
Key to the new system is its lining of British Gypsum’s unique
Glasroc MultiBoard, a high performance gypsum board with an
integral glass fibre reinforcement matt which gives the board
superior fire performance, as well as additional strength and
resilience to prevent it disintegrating, under blast conditions,
into potentially lethal shrapnel-like fragments.
Based on the company’s previous blast refuge wall system, new
BlastWall has been re-engineered to use standard, readily available
components, including a framework of Gypframe standard 92mm wide
‘C’ Stud and standard channel, making it quicker and easier to
build, and less costly than other alternatives.
The new BlastWall system can be built to a maximum 5.4 metres
high, making it suitable for virtually all commercial and
government buildings, and will provide a full two hours fire
resistance .The latest test on the system also included a door set,
showing that access can be included without downgrading
performance.
As additional security, the new BlastWall is covered by British
Gypsum’s SpecSure® lifetime warranty, guaranteeing component
integrity and specified performance throughout the installed life
of the system.
